Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 15, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Semantic Zoom ("Semantic Zoom", "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and protects personal information when you use the Semantic Zoom macOS application and the semantic-zoom.com website (together, the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Who we are
Semantic Zoom is the provider of the Service and the controller of the personal information described in this policy. You can reach us at support@semantic-zoom.com for any privacy question or request.
2. Information we collect
- Account information. The email address you use to sign in, and an internal account identifier. Authentication is provided by Supabase. If you sign in with Google, we receive your email address from Google; we do not receive your Google password.
- Subscription and billing information. Your plan, subscription status, renewal date, and a customer/subscription identifier used to manage your subscription. Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not collect or store your full payment card number, CVC, or bank details; those are handled directly by Stripe.
- Usage statistics. Aggregate numeric counts, such as how many words you have simplified or sharpened and how many zoom sessions you have run. These are totals only and do not include the content of the text you select.
- Text you submit for rewriting. When you request a rewrite, the text you have selected is transmitted to our server and to our AI provider to generate the result, which is returned to you. We do not retain the content of the text after the response is delivered, and we do not use it to train AI models.
- Technical and session data. To keep you signed in, an authentication token is stored locally on your device (in the app's local storage or, on the website, in your browser). Our servers process standard request metadata (such as IP address and timestamps) transiently to operate and secure the Service.
- Product analytics. On our website we use PostHog to understand how the Service is used (for example, which pages are viewed and which features are used) so we can improve it. This may involve cookies or local storage and device/browser information. It does not include the content of the text you rewrite.
We use this analytics data only to operate and improve the Service. We do not use third-party advertising trackers and do not build advertising profiles about you.
3. How we use information
- To provide the rewrite feature and return results to you.
- To create and administer your account, free trial, and subscription.
- To process payments and prevent fraudulent or abusive use.
- To display your own usage statistics to you.
- To respond to your support requests.
- To maintain, secure, and improve the reliability of the Service and to comply with legal obligations.
4. Legal bases for processing
Where the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation applies, we process personal information on the following bases: performance of a contract (to provide the Service, your account, and your subscription); legitimate interests (to secure, operate, and improve the Service and prevent abuse); legal obligation (to meet tax, accounting, and other legal requirements); and consent, where we ask for it. You may withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent.
5. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share information only with service providers that process it on our behalf to run the Service:
- Supabase: account authentication and database hosting.
- Stripe: payment processing and subscription management.
- OpenAI: generating the rewritten text from your selection.
- PostHog: product analytics to understand and improve website and app usage.
These providers are bound by their own agreements and privacy commitments and may only use the information to provide services to us. We may also disclose information if required by law, to enforce our agreements, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users, the public, or Semantic Zoom, and in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this policy.
6. International transfers
Our providers may process information in the United States and other countries. Where required, transfers are made using appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
7. Data retention
We retain your account, subscription, and usage-statistics data for as long as your account remains active. The text you submit for rewriting is processed transiently and is not retained by us after the response is returned. When you delete your account, we cancel any active subscription and delete your account and usage data, except where we are required to retain limited records (for example, billing records) to comply with legal, tax, or accounting obligations.
8. Security
Your sign-in session is stored locally on your device. Secret keys and credentials are held only on our servers and are never embedded in the app or the website. We use reputable infrastructure providers and industry-standard safeguards, including encryption in transit. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Your rights and choices
- Access, correction, and deletion. You can delete your account at any time from the Account page or in the app, which permanently removes your data and cancels any subscription. You may also contact us to access or correct your information.
- Cancellation. You can turn off auto-renewal at any time and keep access until the end of your paid period.
- EU/UK residents may have rights to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or object to processing, and to data portability, and may lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
- California residents have rights under the CCPA/CPRA to know, access, delete, and correct personal information, and to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under California law.
- To exercise any right, email support@semantic-zoom.com. We will verify your request through your account email and respond within the time required by applicable law.
10. Children
The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will revise the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, provide additional notice through the Service or by email. Your continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy.
